Rotary encoder with self-alignment.
Encoders with self-alignment and stator coupling directly connect the measuring device's pitch circle to the shaft being measured. The scanning unit is guided on the shaft via the ball bearing and supported by the stator coupling. The latter only absorbs the torque resulting from bearing friction during angular accelerations. This reduces static and dynamic measurement deviations to an absolute minimum. In addition, the coupling attached to the stator compensates for axial movements of the drive shaft.

Rotary encoder without self-alignment.
A special feature of encoders without self-bearing is the fact that the installation and adjustment of the scanning head have a significant influence on the achievable overall accuracy. This is in addition to the specified system accuracy. In particular, the eccentric mounting of the scale and concentricity deviations of the shaft being measured have an impact. Furthermore, encoders without self-bearing operate without friction. The scanning head, scale disk, scale drum, or measuring tape are adjusted to each other during assembly.

Incremental encoder – For speed feedback or relative positioning.
An incremental encoder generates a series of pulses in response to linear or rotational motion. These pulses can be used for speed measurement or forwarded to a PLC or counter to track a relative position. The output signal of an incremental encoder is usually an electrical square wave signal with a specific frequency related to the speed of the encoder shaft.
Absolute encoder – For positioning or digital speed.
Absolute singleturn and multiturn encoders generate a position value that indicates the actual position of the encoder shaft. But what happens if the application loses power supply?
