Successful Project Completion for SCHMACHTL – IKB Opens First Large-Scale Energy Storage Facility.
We at SCHMACHTL are pleased that, together with the Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG (IKB), we have implemented a powerful large energy storage facility at the Obere Sill power plant near Innsbruck, which was officially inaugurated on Thursday, 19.02.2026.

With this solution, the seasonal shifts in production during times of higher consumption are bridged, thus ensuring increased energy supply security for large parts of the city of Innsbruck.
Our Customized SCHMACHTL System Solution for Supply Security
At the project site, modern infrastructure was established that meets the high requirements for technology and logistics. Our system solution includes:
- A transformer with 3.8 MVA
- Two 20-foot containers with two inverters with a total power of 3.5 MW and
- Two storage batteries with a total capacity of 6.88 MWh.
Our solution is precisely tailored to the requirements of power plant operations.
From Project Start to Successful Official Opening
The official project start took place on June 10, 2025, during a joint kick-off with all involved partners.
In September 2025, the successful Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) was conducted with our SCHMACHTL team and project manager Lukas Hirschhuber from IKB directly at our supplier KEHUA in Xiamen.
From December 1 to 03, 2025, the commissioning of the plant took place. Our SCHMACHTL project and service team was on site and successfully implemented the commissioning together with our partner KEHUA and the responsible persons from IKB. Besides the extensive technical and structural requirements, the complex access situation to the site also posed a particular challenge. However, we managed this with a very experienced and cooperative transport company. Congratulations to our project manager, Silvio Steiner, who successfully implemented the entire project together with our experts and the IKB team in just six months.
A particularly nice moment for us was the official opening of the plant on February 19, 2026, where we celebrated the completion of the successful project on site together with IKB. Here is the link to the feature on Tirol TV ->.
