Overview

River water filtration to protect turbine cooling systems at Schwarzach storage power plant.

It is only through the use of an automatic filter system from BOLL & KIRCH Filterbau GmbH that the safe and low-maintenance operation of the machine sets at the Schwarzach power plant has become possible.

The power plant is located on the banks of the Salzach River southwest of the village of Schwarzach in Salzburg. The machine hall houses 4 machine sets, each consisting of a Francis spiral turbine with a rated output of 34,400 kW.

The various cooling systems of the turbines are fed with the river water of the Salzach. During high water, the proportion of suspended solids and glacial debris in this water is so greatly increased that the standard filter technology used in the past had to be operated in a very maintenance-intensive manner or the sensitive turbine cooling system was not sufficiently protected.

It is only through the use of an automatic filter system - precisely adapted to the special operating conditions - that the safe and low-maintenance operation of the machine sets at the Schwarzach power plant has become possible. The BOLLFILTER Automatic Type 6.18.2 HD installed there is able to cope with the difficult operating and load situations, which fluctuate greatly, primarily because of its heavy-duty (HD) design and precisely adapted filter element technology.

Franz Harlander, the responsible plant foreman at the Schwarzach power plant, confirms, "This type of filter has now been running for quite some time to our complete satisfaction and with a manageable maintenance effort."
